Scootering

SCOOTER DETAILS

-

Name of scooter & reason: Dominator, named after the exhaust I originally had on there, but it should dominate most other scoots on the road due to horsepower and the fact it’s a liquid cooled four-stroke so it can maintain high speeds over long distances unlike the highly tuned two-strokes around. Scooter model: Scomadi 400fi (the only one in existence). Date purchased & cost: November 2016. Inspiration for project: I wanted a reliable high powered four-stroke for long distance rallies. Time to build & by who: Built by Stephen Robinson in about three months. Any specialised parts or frame mods: All work done by Stephen Robinson: major frame mods, complete new sub frame to take engine cradle and silent block, remade fuel tank which was a nightmare, upgraded (strengthened) forks, remade Dominator exhaust system, replaced by a one off NRP exhaust with carbon fibre end cap, remade Lambretta centrestand, reworked radiator position and air scoop, custom rear shock mount, extra shock mount welded to engine casing, reworked GTS rear mudguard, new battery box in legshield toolbox, remade airbox and filter, repositioned fuel injection unit, major electrical work to graft the Burgman loom into the Scomadi loom, external 12v water pump, up-rated front & rear Bitubo suspension, remade custom seat with extra padding by Scoot Right, Manchester, heated grips, HID headlight kit. Custom graphics by The Image Works, Ilkeston. Describe engine performance, power delivery and scooter handling: Smooth but impressive power delivery, pulls like a train. Top speed & cruising speed: Top speed 100+mph, cruising 85mph (ish). Is the scooter reliable: Yes. Standard four-stroke liquid-cooled engine designed for long distance cruising. Paintwork & murals done by: The Image Works, Ilkeston. Any chrome: All shiny stuff de-chromed and matt blacked (editor approves) Overall cost: Approx £4500 total on the original Scomadi, the complete Suzuki Burgman donor scoot plus various other parts including exhaust systems, custom seat and graphics. What was the hardest part of the project: Getting the fuel tank to fit around the engine. Any advice or tech tips for anyone starting a project: If you’re converting a Scomadi don’t use a Burgman engine it's a complete ball ache. Anything still to add: Not happy with the Dominator exhaust position, I’ve now replaced it with a custom-made system built by NRP. Is there anyone you wish to thank: I really can’t thank Steve Robinson enough, all I did was buy stuff. Without his tireless commitment it would never have been built, his patience is unbelievable and I simply can’t sing his praises enough. Also, The Image Works for the graphics and Gary at Scoot Right for the custom seat, NRP in Billsthorpe for one-off exhaust made to suit, and fit, with a carbon fibre end cap.
