Rally Report

It’s always good to end the rally season with a good old shindig. For almost a decade VFM have chosen the Haven resort in Mablethorpe for their finale!

Dave O brings us his closing view of the season from the Haven resort in Mablethorpe.

Although ‘holiday camp’ locations are not to everybody’s taste, this venue is perfect for this type of event. Everything is on-site, and after extensive modernisation a couple of years ago the facilities are really good. Soon after 12pm on the Friday people started to arrive, and even though a bit nippy most had a decent journey to the east coast. Throughout the afternoon the site filled, so much so that by the time the night entertainment kicked into action, all three venues were packed.

Upstairs was northern soul, the entrance bar under the guidance of Dr Kitch and as always the VFM DJs kept the main hall rocking until the early hours! Live music was also on the ‘menu’ throughout the weekend with no fewer than five bands/ artists taking to the stage. As per VFM’s ethos these were from a mixture of musical backgrounds – rockabilly, ska, soul, indie and even a one man acoustic set. From their names I’ll let you guess the gendre – Hobo Kings and The Freight Train, Pulp’d, Chequered Past and the Northern Soul Elite! After some initial shyness the punters were soon lured onto the dance floor.

Several people were in fancy dress, notables including gas/fallout attack and a group of gangsters and their molls. Saturday also saw the main hall turned into a dealers’ market, where you could buy anything from a spark plug to scooter embossed toilet paper! Outside the bright weather brought forward a small but well represented ridden custom show. During the day attendees seem to split between the camp entertainment and a venture into the nearby town. Purely for info I checked out both and must admit a very enjoyable afternoon was had sampling brews!

After this years ‘interesting’ 2019 events schedule announcements I’m glad to say Mablethorpe is still on for next year; as always chalets/numbers are limited so if you do fancy a great end to your year make sure to get in early with bookings, Happy Crimbo!
