RICH PICKLINGS
was a feast Motorcycle show This year’s Milan EICMA 2018... Stan reports from for scooterists.
The Esposizione Internazionale del Ciclo, Motociclo, Accessori (EICMA) in Milan is Europe’s largest motorcycle show. Held at the start of November it’s the prime venue for major manufacturers to showcase new models and accessories. This year’s show produced a banquet of new releases to interest Scootering readers.
The GTS has been in need of a refresh for some time now but in terms of styling it’s a case of ‘evolution not revolution’. The front end now conforms to Vespa’s ‘Tie’ design and lighting now benefits from LED technology but only GTS aficionados will be able to spot the other cosmetic changes. There are now five models in the range: GTS, GTS Touring, GTS Super, GTS SuperSport and the brand-new, technological Vespa GTS SuperTech, with colour TFT display, smartphone interface and built in navigation system. The redesign has also improved under-seat storage and Vespa claims that two ‘jet’ helmets can now be stowed.
The 2019 range also sees both 125 and 300 versions gain new power-plants. While the 125 receives the well proven i-Get unit; the 300 benefits from an all new ‘High Performance Engine’ (HPE). This unit has benefited from extensive work aimed at increasing performance while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption. Piaggio claims a maximum power output of 17.5kW (23.8hp) at 8250rpm, which translates into a 12% increase on the previous unit, making it the most powerful production Vespa to leave the gates of Pontedera.
Although the HPE Sei Giorni has been listed at £5499 – exactly the same price as its predecessor – there are strong rumours that the SuperTech will carry a premium. If that proves to be correct the GTS will have to compete in a price bracket dominated by maxi scooters. Whether that’s a wise decision only time will tell. www.vespa.com
