Name: Jan Slosmanis Scooter club: Grimsby Scooter Club. How did you first become interested in scooters: Friends at school, plus I was a psychobilly and there has always been a connection between the music and scooters. What was your first scooter: 50 Special – which I never got running. First rally or event: Morecambe ’89. How did you get there: Rode with a Mod from school, on a route based on town-town, no idea of any actual road numbers, just Grimsby–Brigg-ScunnyDoncaster etc. Any stories: Seized my TS1 on the way to Woolacombe, it went into the back-up van to the rally, and then we went out in the town on the Saturday. I got absolutely wasted on some drink called Rattler, which up to then I’d never heard of before. No idea how I got back to the venue, woke up next morning with the worst hangover ever. I then had to strip the engine down, replace the piston and clean up the barrel with an emery nail file. I put it all back together with the proviso that it may not get me home, but it would hopefully get me out of the gate. Not only did it get me home with no issues, but I also did Brid’, Kelso & Weston on it the following year before getting it ported and re-plated. Favourite and worst rally/ event: Favourite – Exmouth by a mile. Never had a bad time, the weather has always been good (until the Sat night/ Sun morning this year) and the locals are always very friendly. Worst – easy, Skegness ’90, absolutely freezing, the campsite was a hole. There was police road-blocks stopping us getting into the town and diverting us to that shitty stock-car stadium. What’s the furthest you’ve ever ridden on a scooter: Woolacombe, 340 miles. What do you like about rallies/events: Meeting up with friends from around the country, finding new pubs – preferably ones a bit set back from the usual routes. Having a good laugh with club-mates and spending the Saturday afternoon sessions generally ripping the piss out of each other! What do you dislike about rallies/ events: Too much of the same music in all the pubs/do's. Not everyone likes ska, Jam and 2 Tone. Also, I really don't like to see all the campers with scooters on the back or trailered. If you're not going to ride your scooter there, don't – but don’t take it along to pretend you have! What’s your favourite Scootering magazine feature: Tech Torque.
