Prodigy Scooter Collective Resurrection Rally: The Second Coming

Start your scooters for a super fun-filled party in a field, organised by a group of 20 to 30-year-olds who are bringing an inspiring mind set to the old skool style rally.

The Ashton-on-Mersey rugby club was the venue made ready for the weekend’s activities. With the banners set up on the gate and the team gazebo at the entrance, the event saw a steady flow of weekend campers arriving to pitch their tents on the campsite on Friday. By early afternoon the DJs had got themselves set up in the clubhouse and were delivering a flow of scooter tunes. In the meantime, more arrivals who’d waited until Friday evening’s rush hour had died down were now turning up and pitching their tents.

That evening, Danny Firth came on stage and delivered an electric/acoustic set of indie songs from the 90s and 00s. After Danny had completed his set, DJs Terror and Matt carried on the party until midnight and then things moved over to the silent disco. Due to some unforeseen circumstances the silent disco wasn’t able to be delivered in the clubhouse as planned. However, with a bit of initiative, and after some creative thinking the team found some plug sockets in the changing rooms and had the silent disco outside on the patio. When the rain came, they moved it inside into the changing room area; the lights were turned off and were replaced by multi-coloured lights.

English breakfast

Saturday morning saw some tired faces, but from first thing the clubhouse was on hand to serve up some eagerly awaited full English breakfasts and butties. After a steady start to the morning, more arrivals were greeted at the gate by the friendly team and were quickly directed on to the campsite to get themselves settled in. In the meantime, a small traders market was being set up by the entrance to the clubhouse. By lunchtime the clubhouse bar opened and whilst smooth Reggae tunes were played on the P.A., a warm atmosphere was developing. Having checked out what was going on inside, I returned back to the campsite and chatted with some of the rally-goers. The main message that I picked up from them about the rally was that its main appeal is that

it’s delivered by a team of young scooterists who have a keen appetite for the scene. Also, the different style of music offered throughout the weekend was another significantly positive attraction.

Forming up

The custom show scooters had started to form up next to the traders’ stands, and in spite of the weather the custom show attracted a healthy line-up of scooters. The custom show awards covered 13 categories and the trophies had been personally handcrafted by friends of the collective, Liam Simm, Lloyd Watts and Jake Cox. The judging of the custom show started just after 1pm and a couple of late arrivals just made it into the competition. Meanwhile, inside the clubhouse warm food was being served and the music had changed over to Manchester and Indie sounds. The custom show results were announced and Best in Show went to Tim Girvan’s superb custom Vespa.

The evening’s entertainment started with the DJs and then the live band, Indie Division, played a cracking set of tracks by the Stone Roses, the Smiths, Joy Division and others. After Indie Division had completed their set the DJs took over, who were then followed by the silent disco, which was this time held in the clubhouse and went on into the early hours.

Passion for scootering

Matt Howarth of the collective said: “We hope we’ve delivered a successful event that everyone’s enjoyed. We’d like to thank SMART for the weekend’s security, Lyndsey, Josh and staff from the rugby club, the bands, and everyone that’s supported us with the rally. We’re a group of 20 to 30-year-olds who are balancing our careers and education with our passion for scootering, and we’re trying to do something different.

“As well as the existing scootering community, we also hope that our rally will attract younger people to the scene and show them what’s on offer.”
