YAMBRETTA RD250 SPEC

-

Name of scooter & reason: Yambretta RD250 – because it is one!

Scooter model: GP 150.

Date purchased & cost: About eight years ago, swapped for an Indian GP in bits. It was nothing like it is today, everything has been changed but the Yamaha engine was already fitted into the frame, which is what I wanted it for.

Inspiration for project: I prefer cutdowns and I prefer going quickly.

Time to build & by who: It has evolved over eight years from a pile of rubbish when I got it (honestly, it was shocking) to what it is today. More recently Gary Hancox has had a hand in doing many parts for it. Engine spec

Engine: 1976 RD250 air cooled. Exhaust: One-off handmade – Performance Fabrications (Sunbury-on-Thames). Clutch: One-off hydraulic conversion – Gary Hancox.

Gearbox: Standard, gearing changed by rear sprocket size.

Carb: Standard and up-jetted.

Porting: Fast road tune – geared for 98mph at 9000rpm.

Dyno: 40.19bhp at the rear wheel with 24.1ft-lb torque.

Describe engine performance, power delivery

and scooter handling: Engine performance has always been great since I had the engine tuned, but the power delivery was shocking due to the handmade exhausts built by the tuner (the less said about that the better). The new exhausts have transformed the power delivery – I thoroughly recommend Mark at Performance Fabrications. If you keep it in the power band it is great fun, and just keeps pulling, but also happy to run around town or at 50mph with other scooters. The handling is great, PM tuning Monster forks and 13-inch wheels.

Any other details: One-off fuel tank (Gary Hancox), GPS speedo (eBay) Dyno by Dynotech in Bramley, seat by Jozef Leathersmith.

Paintwork & murals done by: Halfords satin

black, easy to touch up!

What was the hardest part of the project: The back light…I lost it on the way back from Oddballs, now moving its location as that is the third one.

Thanks to: In addition to Gary Hancox and my wife Amelia as previously mentioned, I’d also like to thank Mark Dent at Performance Fabrications for the exhausts.
