Name of scooter & reason: Vespa Madspeed No1; it’s the only Madspeed Vespa out there.
Scooter model: Vespa Mk1.
Date purchased & cost: in 2017 for £1200.
Inspiration for project: To keep a legendary scoot on the road.
Time to build & by who: About two years.
Engine spec
Kit: Malossi MHR 210.
Crank: 60mm Mazzucchelli bell crank. Carb: 28mm PHBH with reed valve. Exhaust: Malossi power exhaust.
Clutch: Banded Cosa carbon fibre clutch plates with extra strong springs. Gearbox & sprockets: P200 box with T5 fourth gear.
Ignition timing: 18 BTDC.
Carb jetting specs: 130 main, 55 idle, 70 choke and AV264 Atomiser.
Porting work by: Andy Liddle, Spanner Monkeys.
Dyno done by: Wazza, Wilkinson Racing, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire.
What brand of oil do you run: Rock oil synthesis fully synth 3%.
Chassis spec:
Tyres: Michelin SP1.
Suspension: Fully adjustable (but needs a better set-up).
Grips: Sundance.
Levers: PM Tuning.
Seat: King and queen.
Fuel tank & tap: Mk1 with fast-flow tap. Hubs: Genuine Piaggio.
Brakes: Front disc, rear drum.
Describe engine performance and scooter handling: Rapid with 22.2hp and loads of torque; it easily pulls two-up even up Garrowby Hill! Handling is okay but it could do with an upgrade to the standard suspension set-up.
Top speed & cruising speed: Dynoed at 97mph and it will cruise all day at 70.
Is the scooter reliable: So far so good, it’s never let me down.
Paintwork by: Original paintwork: Trotsky. New side panels: Relentless Paintworx, Bradford.
Powder coating by: Colour Co, Halifax.
Overall cost of work and components: Wouldn’t like to say as everything is a fiver, if ya get my drift?!
