Scootering

Thank your lucky stars

-

On getting his find home, Rod set about lavishing several metaphorical cans full of the proverbial elbow grease on the body, panel work and running gear. Needless to say, the then 63-year-old Lambretta cleaned up very nicely. Since becoming the third owner of this scooter, Rod has made one change, has a couple more items in mind plus a plan for later this year. “I toyed with giving the LD a bit of a restoration makeover, with only a minimal amount of faint surface rust in a few places on the original Innocenti paintwork, for now, I’m keeping it original. It’s only ever in original condition once. There was an inside legshield mounted old leather bag fitted which I removed, I’ve since ‘filled’ the two holes in the legshields with an aftermarket LD badge bar fitted with a couple of spotlights. I’ve yet to wire up the spotlights, that’ll be one of my next to-do jobs. I need to get a lock and key for the speedo dash glovebox, which shouldn’t be too hard. I’ve thought about getting a clock to sit alongside the speedo on the dash. Lockdown restrictions allowing, the plan is to ride the LD to the Isle of Wight rally, August bank holiday... it’s where it was sold when new and resided for years. It’ll be a homecoming for my LD.”

Whether there is actually such a thing as a lucky star is subject to conjecture, but if there should happen to be such an entity, it’s very likely it’s been shining brightly on Rod. Words and photographs: Sarge
