Lincolnshire WW2 airfield tour
Not to be thwarted by the coronavirus pandemic, when the first lockdown restrictions eased one Lincolnshire couple took the opportunity to carry out a mini county-wide tour of their own during the summer of 2020.
As the Covid-19 pandemic took a hold in March 2020, the Government brought in a lockdown for the UK which shut down the entire scooter event scene, including the Nationals and the LCGBrun members’ rallies – not to mention all the locally run events that have been established for a number of years.
As the first lockdown drew to a close and restrictions eased off, it was very clear none of the pre-planned events would be going on at all throughout 2020.
So Pete Hughes and his wife Annette decided maybe there was something they could do themselves to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Pete and Annette live in the county of Lincolnshire, where during the Second World War there were more than 50 operational airfields throughout the county. This gave the couple a purpose – to hopefully ride to each and every one of these airfield locations which saw action between 1939 and 1945.
As a challenge, Pete and Annette involved a few friends to take part purely for fun; it was thought that the challenge could be done in, or on, your own choice of transport – two or four wheels – and combining as many or as few of these sites as they liked on each trip.
It was clear this wasn't going to be a race to the finish and as a group of friends, it was established by Pete and Annette to be able to be part of something after the tough times we all found ourselves in through the lockdown.
