Master modeller

Every scooter builder needs an eye for detail, but Fabio Ranucci needs a magnifying glass….

-

It’s a fair bet that most readers of Scootering will, at some point in their life, have glued together an Airfix model or two. It’s also reasonable to say that few, if any, of us ever achieved the standards displayed by Fabio Ranucci.

A chef from Rome, Fabio has been making models for most of his life. Bored with the challenges posed by commercial model kits, Fabio has joined an elite band of modellers, namely those who build entirely from scratch.

With each model taking around a month to complete, it should come as no surprise that there’s a strong motivation behind Fabio’s miniature Vespa obsession. ‘I got my love of Vespas from my father who owned a Faro Basso,” he explained. “Sadly he died some time ago but I wanted to recreate the machine I most associated with him.”

To create his miniature masterpieces Fabio begins by 3D printing the main pieces, while the smaller components are fashioned individually. Each model is made from around 10 main components with the paint also being applied by Fabio.

Having completed the tribute to his father’s Faro Basso, a friend suggested that Fabio posted some images on Facebook. “The response was amazing,” said Fabio. “I have been commissioned to build another Faro Basso, an ‘Ostrich’ and a 125 U. My next project is a Model 98 and after that a 90SS.” Although Fabio’s always happy to talk about possible commissions, at around €400 these models certainly require more pocket money than the average Airfix kit.
