ROLLING WITH RHODZ

Every month you ask our resident tyre expert, Rhodz, sales manager at Cambrian tyres (the UK’s largest motorcycle tyre distributor) and dedicated PX rider for his recommendations. This month we’re saving pennies…

Hi Rhodz,

Things are a bit tight at the moment, we’ve sold the second car and my PX (sob!). Some of the money’s been used to buy a two-year-old GTS 300. The plan is for me to use it all year for work and pottering around, with the occasional rally and long-distance trip thrown in. It’s due a new set of tyres; I’ll need something that can be used all year round, gives good performance and won’t break the bank.

Hi Mat

The popular consumer-friendly tyres are going to be the Anlas Allgrip or the Kenda Kozmik.

Firstly, the Allgrip. This tyre is ideal for any road condition be it wet or dry/cold or warm. The tread compound is designed for long-lasting high grip in all conditions, providing nimble handling and quick direction changes – making it an ideal commuter in urban conditions. The large centre knob design (no chuckling) provides enhanced rolling stability and combined with the continual grip on the shoulders makes this an extremely comfortable ride.

Secondly, the Kenda Kozmik.

We’re now entering dual compound territory, which pits this against the bigger brands. Dual compound has been around for a few years in the motorcycle tyre world, so doesn’t get talked about as much these days as it has very much become the norm. However, in scooter sizes, this is all rather exciting. Imagine having a long-lasting centre, but with softer shoulders for increased grip when leant over (a bit like the old Dime bar advert, “soft on the outside, hard in the middle”) although not many everyday commuters would feel the need to make full use of this extra corner grip. Another thing worth noting is that this is a tyre suited for all weather, be it bone dry or a wet weekend, thanks to the unique tread sipes designed for efficient water dispersal and a rather quick warm-up time.
