Don’t sue, just count your blessings

-

KaTie Kelly is the mother who is suing the nHS because her contraceptive implant was not inserted properly. in fact, it was not inserted at all.

The result was that Katie gave birth to her daughter, niamh, when she was only 18. and having a child, she says, has robbed her of her independence, youth and ambition.

How sad for her — and for her four-year-old daughter — that instead of counting her blessings she thinks she deserves more money from the nHS. She has already been paid £11,000 but that is not enough. Katie wants more cash.

yet, in some respects, i can understand her pain. after all, she was a responsible teenager who took pragmatic steps to ensure she did not become pregnant. in this, the NHS let her down and she has clearly been wronged.

However, no contraceptive is 100 per cent effective. and being a single mother is not the end of her life. She does herself no favours by following this line of thought and engaging in the draining path of litigation and lawyers.

She is young, with her life ahead of her. is it not better to accept that mistakes do happen, but that this was a life-enhancing one, not a life-endangering one?

and to please, please spare a thought for all the women out there who would give almost anything to have a niamh of their own; a beautiful, healthy little girl to love and cherish.
