WALK OF THE WEEK

ENJOY a magical and historic autumnal walk to the summit of Mither Tap O’Bennachie near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire for incredible sweeping views over the countryside and on to Aberdeen.

This steep but very rewarding walk starts at the car park (small parking charge applies) by the Bennachie Visitor Centre (the centre is closed for the winter but the toilets remain open), which is well signposted from the main A96 and from Chapel of Garioch.

From the car park follow the green Mither Tap Timeline Trail waymarkers on a well-maintained trail through lovely birch and pine woodlands.

As you climb higher, the woodlands open out, providing fabulous views over rich farmland and the nearby towns of Inverurie and Oldmeldrum.

Further up above the treeline, the trail gives way to a stone path and steps leading to the entrance of the remains of the Iron Age hill fort.

Walk through the narrow entrance to the fort and the summit of Bennachie’s highest peak, Mither Tap, lies a short distance further, where you will enjoy dramatic views over vast swathes of farmland, forests and hilltops.

There’s also a summit marker to help you identify distant points of interest. Return by your outward route or, if you’re feeling energetic, carry on to the next highest peak in the range, Oxen Craig, around another 1.5 miles further on.
