I had premonition my golfer fiancé would die in tragedy

- By Bill Caven

THE fiancée of a promising Scottish golfer has paid a loving tribute on the first anniversary of his death at the hands of a drink-driver.

Jennifer Mouncey was speaking publicly for the first time about her terrible loss after Neil Fyfe was killed cycling home from his dream job in the United States.

Having caddied for some of the biggest names in golf, the 28-yearold, from Aberdeen, was tipped to become a professional.

However, the sportsman died after being hit by drink- driver Jesse Steudte shortly after leaving the exclusive Sebonack Golf Club in The Hamptons, New York, exactly a year ago.

Yesterday, his fiancée told of her heartache as his 23-year-old killer begins a minimum four-year sentence for manslaughter.

Speaking at her home in Bridge of Don, Aberdeenshire, the 26year-old businesswoman said: ‘I went to New York for Jesse Steudte’s court case in February.

‘I told him he had taken a very special person away from us and that he had robbed me of the chance of having children with Neil and had robbed Neil of his PGA dream. But I added that I hoped he would learn from his terrible mistake and make a brighter future for himself.’

She continued: ‘It is what Neil would have wanted. Jesse apolo- gised to me and that helped bring some closure.’

Miss Mouncey supported her fiancé when he moved to the US, despite having a premonition it would end badly.

She said: ‘I had a feeling Neil was not safe in the US. The job in The Hamptons was to be his last before he tried to get on the Scottish and European tours.’

‘Neil said that as soon as he landed in New York he felt like he needed to get on a plane to Aberdeen. His instinct was telling him something wasn’t right.

‘But I knew he really wanted the job so I said we would be reunited in a few months. Inside, my heart was breaking, I missed him so much. I guess I was going against my instinct, too.’
