Not even Carol can forecast how well she’s going to weather Strictly

- By Maureen Sugden

BEYOND ‘a bit of Scottish country dancing’, she claims not to know her left foot from her right.

But Carol Kirkwood, 53, was yesterday named as the latest contestant in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up.

The Scot, who is the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast, said she was ‘beyond excited’ about appearing on the show as she is a huge fan.

Unveiled on BBC Breakfast yesterday morning, Miss Kirkwood, who is originally from Morar in Inverness-shire, told host and former Strictly contestant Bill Turnbull: ‘I’ve only done Scottish country dancing, so I don’t have a favourite dance. But I like the look of ballroom. I can’t wait to learn to dance and hope my experience on Strictly will be a breeze. Whether it will be or not is one forecast I cannot predict.

‘It doesn’t feel real yet as we haven’t started training or dancing. I can do a bit of mum dancing, but I don’t know my left foot from my right. But I am beyond excited to be taking part. I’ve been a huge fan since it started.’

While the celebrities have not yet been paired with their professional partners, she admitted she has a soft spot for Slovenian dancer Aljaž Skorjanec, 25, who previously won the competition with model Abbey Clancy.

Miss Kirkwood has danced on screen before, though, having performed with BBC colleagues in several routines for Children in Need in 2002, including a number from The Rocky Horror Show.

She joins BBC presenter Jeremy Vine, 50, TV chef Ainsley Harriott, 58, Proms host Katie Derham, 45, EastEnders star Kellie Bright, 3 , and former Coronation Street actress Georgia May Foote, 24, in the 13th series of Strictly, which begins next month.
