Carol’s stormy start on Strictly dancefloor
SHE wowed viewers by taking to the dance floor in a daring gold dress that revealed her enviably long legs.
And it seems the jive performed by BBC Proms presenter Katie Derham was no less impressive.
She has emerged as the surprise favourite in the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing after the first two live shows aired over the weekend.
But Scots weather presenter Carol Kirkwood didn’t do so well and ended up on the bottom of the leaderboard.
Miss Derham, 45, confidently took to the floor dressed in a short, flapperstyle dress to perform an energetic jive with dance partner Anton Du Beke. They flew around the floor to Roll Over Beethoven by Chuck Berry and earned 26 points.
It was even deemed ‘the most sophisticated and stylish jive we’ve ever had on the programme’ by the notoriously harsh Craig Revel Horwood.
The panel could not help but comment on Miss Derham’s ‘great legs’ following the show-stopping per- formance, which saw bookmakers slash the odds on the couple from 25/1 to 9/1. Praise from the judges was a welcome break for Du Beke. In previous years he has been lumbered with the least-talented partners.
Last year he danced with tennis coach Judy Murray, who was mercilessly teased for her ‘wooden’ performances and was unflatteringly compared to an ‘ironing board’.
Du Beke was also famously partnered with former MP Ann Widdecombe.
Unfortunately, Ms Kirkwood proved less of a success in the new series. The BBC Breakfast forecaster, from Morar, was one of those in the first six couples who danced on Friday. But after a nervous performance she scored only 16 points.
Elsewhere, Sir Bruce Forsyth’s mind was on higher things – such as what he would do if he were director general of the BBC. He told the Radio Time Festival if he was in charge he would do away with BBC Three and BBC Four.
He believes it is ‘spreading too much money out on four channels’ and would like to see the focus shift to the bigger BBC One and BBC Two.
