Night a fox tried to sleep in my bed

- By David Wilkes

THEY have noisy get-togethers in the garden and help themselves to leftovers from the bins.

But sometimes foxes just want a comfy bed for the night.

This cheeky fellow sneaked into Luke MacWilliam’s ground-floor flat just after midnight and made himself very much at home.

The 26-year-old wine shop manager ended up in a stand-off with his visitor, who leapt up on to his bed and refused to budge.

He had been checking his emails when his bedroom door, which backs on to his garden, suddenly slammed shut.

Some mysterious rustling followed – and then he spotted the fox snuggling up on his duvet.

‘It seemed a little bit scared by the situation and unfamiliar territory,’ said Mr MacWilliam, who lives in a houseshare in Ealing, west London.

He added: ‘It was quite a timid little thing and wasn’t aggressive.’ Amused, he took some pictures on his mobile phone to show his friends, before trying to shoo it out into the garden.

Mr MacWilliam said: ‘I went to open the door to let it out.

‘I tried to encourage it to go by ushering it away with my arms and saying “go that way, go that way”. But it moved away and jumped on the bed.

‘I didn’t mind. I love animals. You often see foxes around here, but more often than not they’re dead after being hit by cars.’

Luckily for Mr MacWilliam, the fox thought better of its plan and stole back into the night soon after.

There was never any sense of menace in his visitor but others haven’t been so lucky.

There has been a spate of f ox attacks on pets and children in the past few years.

In 2010, nine-month- old twins Lola and Isabella Koupparis were left with horrific injuries after being mauled in their cot by a fox in Hackney, east London.

And three years later, four-week-old Denny Dolan was dragged from his cot in Bromley, south-east London.

Earlier this week, the first cull of urban foxes for 30 years was postponed f oll owing pressure f r om animal rights activists.

Hackney Council was concerned about attacks on deer in a local park. But its plans were halted after an online petition amassed 7,000 signatures in one day.
