‘Memory loss’ Lamborghini couple hit for six on licence

- By Liz Hull

A WEALTHY couple have been hit by more than £2,400 in fines and costs for failing to reveal who was driving their Lamborghini when it was caught speeding along a seafront promenade.

Property developer Kirk Shenton, 68, and his wife, Beverly, 59, insisted they couldn’t remember who was at the wheel of the 200mph car which was doing 35mph in a 30mph limit.

Desperate not to break the law ‘like MP Chris Huhne’ by naming the wrong driver, the couple requested a picture from police but said it was impossible to see from the grainy image who was driving.

Prosecutors refused to believe they could not remember and charged them with failing to identify the driver. They were fined and given six penalty points each on their licences last week.

Yesterday Mr Shenton, a grandfather of five, hit out at the justice system which he said had penalised them for telling the truth. He said: ‘It’s terrible. We’ve both got clean licences and never been in trouble before in our lives, but they treated us like common criminals.

points each for only being just over the speed limit, on a road with no traffic, no houses and no people – it’s horrendous.

‘The documents from the police clearly state you have to be 100 per cent certain before naming the driver and we couldn’t be sure who was driving. The picture is too dark and grainy and we didn’t want to lie.

‘We had travelled up and down the seafront on that day several times. Both of us had driven the car so we couldn’t be sure who was behind the wheel.

‘Look what happened to Chris Huhne. We tried to stay within the law and we’ve been persecuted for it.’

Magistrates in Llandudno, North Wales, were told that Mr and Mrs Shenton’s £75,000 lime green Lamborghini Gallardo was snapped by a mobile camera van at 35mph on Rhos- on-Sea promenade just before 8pm on March 7. The couple had been in North Wales to view Gwrych Castle which they were interested in buying.

Ex-Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne was jailed for eight months in 2013 for perverting justice over a speeding case ten years earlier. His wife at the time, Vicky Pryce, had claimed she was driving but later revealed he was at the wheel.
