Queens of Hollywood take a bow (and half are Brits!)

- By Jemma Buckley Showbusiness Reporter

THEY’RE among the most influential and talented women in Hollywood – all set to shine during the coming awards season.

But perhaps the most striking thing about this picture is that half of the actresses are our very own stars.

The image is yet further proof that Britons are more than holding their own in the world of US film and TV, 34 years after screenwriter Colin Welland told the Oscars: ‘The British are coming.’

Shot for a special cover of The Hollywood Reporter, the photo features Kate Winslet, 40, who has won an Oscar, an Emmy Award and three Golden Globes in her glittering career. She is expected to be honoured again for her performance in the Steve Jobs biopic.

She is joined by Helen Mirren, 70, who won an Oscar in 2007 for her lead role in the Queen and has this year starred in the films Woman in Gold and Trumbo. Charlotte Rampling, at 69 is another British veteran. She appears in 45 Years a film about a middle-class English couple who have been married for almost half a century.

British youth is represented by Carey Mulligan, 30, who has been tipped for an award for her role as Maud Watts in Suffragette. She has already won a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination for her role in An Education. The youngest star in the line-up, 25-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, is also the highest paid. Thanks to her leading part in the Hunger Games saga, she has raked in £34million in the last year alone.

She is joined by fellow Americans Jane Fonda, 77, and rising star Brie Larson, 26. The portrait of ‘eight of the most talented actresses alive’ is completed by Australian Cate Blanchett, 46.

Extracts from a ‘roundtable’ interview with the eight stars revealed that Miss Mirren takes her onscreen inspiration from ‘babies and animals’ because they are ‘not messed up in the head the way I am’. Miss Winslet spoke about how it had been easier for her to be an actress because she has a ‘very present husband’. The mother-of-three said: ‘I definitely feel less guilt because I know he’s there during breakfast, lunch and supper if I’m not.’
