Family’s fears for ‘homesick’ missing man
Parents join search in Amsterdam
CONCERNS are growing for an ‘incredibly homesick’ man who has been missing in Amsterdam for five days.
Chris Nelson, 24, from Dalkeith, Midlothian, vanished from a friend’s house in the early hours of Sunday morning with no jacket and only €150 in cash.
Last night, his distraught mother expressed her fears for her son, saying she felt ‘physically sick’ with worry after he sent some concerning texts before his disappearance.
Mr Nelson, who lives in Germany with his fiancée, Stephanie Meloy, was staying with friends in the Rechtboomssloot area of Amsterdam when he vanished after a night out.
Mr Nelson and his friends returned home around 3am. They ordered a pizza and sat chatting. Mr Nelson was described as ‘very quiet’ that night and only drank a few sips of his beer.
He got up and left around 5.45am and his not been seen or heard from since, despite frantic efforts to contact him. Mr Nelson was not wearing a jacket and was unfamiliar with the city. His mobile phone has not been reachable and his credit cards inactive.
His parents, Donna and Scott Nelson, travelled to Amsterdam to join the search on Tuesday. They have looked all over the city, including hospitals and train stations, and also appeared on Dutch news.
The family think Mr Nelson could be trying to make his way to his and his girlfriend’s home in Germany or back to Scotland but he does not have his passport.
Mr Nelson and Miss Meloy moved to Kaarst, Germany, in February but he desperately missed home.
His mother, Mrs Nelson, 45, said: ‘I got some concerning texts from him that night – saying how low he was, and how he missed his sisters and was counting the days till he got home. The texts were very out of the ordinary and weren’t how he would normally talk. He said, “I am fighting to keep strong till I get back.”’
Ruling out any drug use as ‘out of character’, she added: ‘It gets scarier and scarier and bleaker and bleaker as the days go on. It is making me physically sick.’
The family and Dutch police had appealed for anyone who has seen Mr Nelson to come forward.
