MALLINDER MOTIVATED BY LAST LOSS TO WARRIORS
JIM MALLINDER is out to erase the pain of his last visit to Glasgow when he brings his Northampton side to Scotstoun this weekend. The scars of that painful day two years ago remain for Mallinder, the bitter memories of seeing his team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Needing a bonus-point win to secure passage to the knock-out stages of the European Cup, the visitors were encamped on the Glasgow line with the sides locked at 20-20. There were only seconds remaining when a rogue punch from Northampton’s Alex Waller gifted Glasgow a penalty. Skipper Al Kellock elected to go for the try and Peter Horne went over to break Northampton hearts. ‘We lost the last time we were up in Glasgow and want to go up there and win this time round,’ said Mallinder. ‘We have a good idea of how Glasgow are going to play. ‘They may have changed personnel but will not change their style of rugby. ‘They will be looking to attack us from all over the field, looking to offload as much as possible, and keep up their aggressive defence. ‘Everybody needs to win at home in Europe, there is a determination to do it, as it is a must. If you don’t win one of your home games, it makes it very awkward as you have to go away and win at least once or twice.’ The Northampton forwards overpowered Scarlets in their Champions Cup opener in the scrum, helping them to a 15-11 victory. Mallinder knows it will take more than power to beat Glasgow and added: ‘We need to be strong in our set-piece, but not just rely on it. ‘You’ve got to threaten teams all over the field. That’s what we hope to do.’
