And best actor goes to... Gerard Butler! (Even he looked a bit surprised)

- By Maureen Sugden

HE won a ‘Razzie’ for worst actor in 2011 for his efforts opposite Jennifer Aniston in their comedy The Bounty Hunter.

Other trophies in his cabinet include a 2007 MTV Movie Award for ‘best fight’ for one of his scenes in action movie 300.

So as he accepted the award for Best International Actor at a ceremony in Germany at the weekend, even Gerard Butler couldn’t quite hide his surprise at the nod for his silver screen work.

The 46-year-old Scot jetted into Hamburg for the 51st annual Goldene Kamera ceremony, where other stars in attendance included Dame Helen Mirren, who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Julianne Moore, who was awarded the Best International Actress.

Looking dapper in a suit and a silk tie, Butler, originally from Paisley, was delighted with his trophy and said thank you from the stage in German, before adding in English: ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so honoured to be here sharing the stage with Julianne and Helen.’

He also gave a shout out in good humour to his home town, saying: ‘Firstly, I would like to thank the people of my village.’ He even added a thank you to a schoolteacher, Mr Rodden.

In a red carpet interview, he said he wasn’t sure where he was going to place his award, adding: ‘I haven’t figured out where I’m going to put it, because I think I’m about to move house, so I’m going to have to figure out where in my new house I can place this.

‘But I can assure you it will take pride of place.’

Butler’s upcoming movie, London Has Fallen – the follow-up to the smash hit Olympus Has Fallen and co-starring Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart – premieres next month and features the Scot as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning.

He said he was excited for the movie to be released, adding: ‘Olympus turned out so great and this is the second one as we started a franchise – it’s even better than the first.

‘It’s me and the President on the road in London with me trying to protect him as we are being hunted all over. It’s a really exciting, heart-pounding thriller.’

The blockbuster star was recently linked to pop singer Rita Ora, who is 21 years his junior, amid claims they enjoyed a date in Hollywood, However, a source later said the relationship is strictly platonic.

Butler’s next release will be fantasy Gods Of Egypt, a trailer for which appeared during the US Super Bowl TV coverage last night.
