At the City Christmas party, Barton stubs a lit cigar into the eye of his young team-mate Jamie Tandy and is forced by City to pay a fine of four weeks’ salary — approximat­ely £60,000 — immediatel­y, with a further two weeks’ suspended for a year. Tandy later sued Barton, winning £65,000 in damages. 2005 Breaks leg of 35-year-old pedestrian while driving his car at 2am in Liverpool city centre.

Involved in altercatio­n with a 15-year-old Everton fan at City’s team hotel in Bangkok in their pre-season tour. Fined eight weeks’ wages by City after being found guilty of gross misconduct. In December, he’s shown a straight red card — for a wild two-footed lunge on Abdoulaye Faye in City’s 2-0 home defeat by Bolton. 2007 Arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage in an incident involving a taxi driver.

Suspended by City for the rest of the season after a training-ground altercatio­n with Ousmane Dabo, which leaves his team-mate needing hospital treatment. He then appears at Trafford magistrate­s court to answer a charge of assault on Dabo.

FA investigat­e Barton’s tackle on Sunderland’s Dickson Etuhu in the Wear-Tyne derby but take no action.

Arrested in December, in Liverpool city centre after a late-night incident and later charged with common assault and affray. 2008 Jailed in May for six months after admitting common assault and affray. He serves 77 days. Receives four-month suspended sentence in July for assaulting Dabo.

On the final day of the season at Manchester City, Barton was sent off in the 55th minute for violent conduct after elbowing Carlos Tevez in the face. He then kicked Sergio Aguero in the back of the knee and attempted to head-butt Vincent Kompany before being dragged from the pitch by former team-mate Micah Richards. After an FA charge, Barton was handed another 12-match ban and fined £75,000. QPR stripped him of the captaincy and fined him six weeks’ wages, believed to be around £500,000. 2013 At Marseille, he’s handed a two-match suspended ban for describing Thiago Silva of Paris Saint-Germain as looking like an ‘overweight ladyboy’ on Twitter.
