Stop trying to blackmail the nation, Nicola

-

Nicola Sturgeon claims that leaving the EU would result in an even more evil Tory government ruling the UK for ever more.

This is sheer fantasy, arising from her own pathological hatred of the Tories, and is designed to try to scare Scots into voting Remain.

Next we learn that she has instructed Scottish civil servants to make contingency plans which include preparation for a second independence referendum in the event of Scotland ‘being dragged out of the EU against our democratically expressed will’.

Whether she denies it or not, Nicola Sturgeon has clearly joined Project Fear.

How dare she make a totally unfounded link between how we vote in the EU referendum and Scotland’s position in the UK?

This is the same Miss Sturgeon who lambasted her political opponents at the Holyrood elections for saying they would oppose a second independence referendum and repeatedly declared that it would be the Scottish people who would decide if and when there would be another.

So what has changed? What evidence does she have, besides from some of her own supporters, to say that if Scots vote differently from the rest of the UK in the EU referendum then they must automatically want a second referendum?

That is not on the ballot paper and none of the opinion polls have shown any evidence to support that view.

it is time Miss Sturgeon stopped trying to blackmail the Scottish people with the threat of another independence referendum every time she doesn’t get her way or someone disagrees with her.

Out of their depth

ToM HaRRiS (Mail) says the EU cannot be reformed and so we must leave.

in effect what he is saying is that our current crop of politicians is so inept as to be unable to get what we want out of Europe and so we should instead leave this shower to run a stand-alone Britain. No thanks, Tom — i’m voting to stay.

Small-minded outlook

iT is utterly wrong to brand all Brexit campaigners ‘little Englanders’. Many are Scots — but they are ‘little,’ all right. They have little imagination, little vision, little compassion.

Don’t back Little Britain

BREXiT seem to want to take us back to the Britain of the 1950s. i lived through that era and it wasn’t the paradise they say it was.

let’s look forward, not back. i don’t give a stuff about ‘British sovereignty’ if it means my grandchildren grow up in an isolated, inward-looking little island.

Think big — vote in on Thursday.

Just do the job!

SEEMS every time i glance at the TV i see Nicola Sturgeon talking about what she wants Scotland to have, telling us what the Scottish people think, and pretending another independence referendum is just around the corner.

We’ve had years of this talk from the SNP. When will it get to grips with the real issues that affect us?

Stop banging on about Europe and independence, First Minister, and tackle the big issues such as education, the economy and the NHS. FRAnces AnDeRson, Ayr.

Separatists to the core

THE SNP should really side with Brexit.

They’re both in favour of small, introspective countries separated from their neighbours.

It’s honourable to say no

THERE are those who gain honours by stepping indelicately over others for their own benefit, but some reject honours because they believe it’s the people they have helped who deserve the recognition.

My grandfather helped build london’s oxford Street, but said the honour should go to his employees and rejected any award himself.

He also rejected the honour of becoming a mayor, as this would have prevented him from voting on council matters affecting his constituents.

i was criticised for refusing a medal while on active service, because i felt the honour should go to brave servicemen who had suffered more than me.

We are not the same as those honoured who then incur the wrath of the public. michAel PeARce, eastleigh, hants.

Silence please!

YES, hospital wards are too noisy (Good Health). i wonder why lucy Elkins didn’t include nurses screaming at each other over the length of the corridor at two in the morning.

Such noise levels are designed to make us all very happy to go home. i didn’t need that encouragement, but i had to suffer the din anyway.

America’s tragedy

aS aN american living in Britain with my English wife, i am not surprised at the massacre in orlando. The number of gun-related deaths in the US is rapidly rising.

i had to leave my home town of chicago, which had more than 3,000 gun deaths by the end of last year. as a former US Marine sergeant during World War ii, i am not anti-gun.

There is no way the rising number of gun deaths in the US will abate because the gun lobby controls congress.

i am so grateful to live in a country where common sense and decency dictates policy.

Warship woe

iT’S not just modern, cutting-edge warships that break down because of Persian Gulf heat (Mail).

a similar thing happened when i was serving on the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious in 1961 and the sea water was too hot for the air conditioning system to work. Victorious was one of six carriers of the illustrious class built in 1939.

in 1961, HMS Victorious was based in Singapore for nine months, and we were on our way to Hong Kong at a steady 11 knots when there was a sudden change of plan.

The long-range radar monitoring system on the Victorious was needed to monitor a situation involving the Soviet Union.

We crossed the indian ocean at a record speed, travelling at 31 knots, and headed into the Persian Gulf. it was soon discovered that the air conditioning was not working as the temperature rose over 38c.

Many of the crew soon suffered heat stroke, especially those in the engine and boiler rooms.

Thank goodness we were relieved after six weeks by another ship with an air-conditioning system that worked.

it would seem the Royal Navy still has not learned how to operate in the Persian Gulf.
