The gum that could help you lose weight

-

ADDING locust bean gum to food may offer a new way to tackle weight gain.

The gum, which is derived from the seeds of the carob tree, mainly found in the Mediterranean region, is a soluble fibre and thickening agent.

When the gum is eaten in food, digestion takes longer.

This helps you feel fuller and more satisfied, according to scientists at the University of Liverpool.

In a new study, 34 women aged 18 to 55 will eat a lunch that consists of a fish ball containing the gum or a ‘placebo’ fish ball.

The researchers will then measure its effect on their food intake and appetite later in the day.
