The first commercial video machine – the Ampex VRX-1000 – was designed in 1956 and cost £30,000.

The video cassette recorder, which became common in most homes, was designed by Sony in 1969. It came to the UK in 1972.

At its peak Blockbuste­r had 9,000 stores and 60,000 employees. It closed down in 2013.

Netflix founder, Reed Hastings, started the firm after being fined £30 for returning a video of Apollo 13 late.

About 50pc of films released on VHS have never made it to DVD – making some titles worth thousands of pounds.
