What can I do about my pointed, witchy chin?

- Dr Tracy Mountford

QSINCE I hit my mid-50s, I’ve noticed my chin is starting to look quite witchy — the dimple on my chin is more pronounced. Is there anything I can do to reverse this?

ATHe chin is one of the tell-tale areas of ageing — especially in middle-aged women. loss of the deep supporting fat in this area, combined with gum recession and loss of bone density, can cause thin lips, wrinkles and a puckered or pointy chin.

a chin crease below the lips can also develop because of tissue loss and sagging skin.

The other interesting thing that happens in midlife is that the mentalis muscle — situated at the end of the chin to control lower lip movement — becomes hyperactive to compensate for the sagging skin.

Fat loss exposes more of this muscle — causing a pebbly or dimpled appearance on the chin.

The good news is that a couple of injections of muscle relaxant into the chin will smooth out the uneven appearance and soften what you call the ‘witchy’ look.

This does have to be repeated every few months or so, but is safe and painless, gives excellent results and is not too costly — around £280 to £350. additionally, re-populating lost volume in the chin not only smooths the area, but also helps blend the chin into the contours of the lower face so that it is rejuvenated and more visually attractive.

I use a hyaluronic acid FDaapproved filler, which lasts approximately a year. Depending on the extent of volume loss, and size and shape of the face, this costs around £550.
