11 police and civilians face inquiry over Janner case

- Daily Mail Reporter

A TOTAL of 11 police officers and civilian staff are under criminal investigation over their handling of child sex abuse claims against Lord Janner.

The former politician, who died aged 87 in December, is alleged to have abused youngsters over more than 30 years dating back to the 1950s.

The 11 individuals have been told by watchdogs that they are under investigation for alleged criminal offences and gross misconduct as part of an inquiry into Leicestershire Police’s handling of the claims against the Labour peer.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission would not reveal how many are officers and how many are civilian staff.

In January, a report by High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques found that failures by police and prosecutors meant three chances were missed to charge Lord Janner in 1991, 2002 and 2007.

The peer was later charged with sexual offences dating back to the 1960s but died days after being found unfit to stand trial because he had dementia.

The criminal case was dropped but claims against Lord Janner are now being examined as part of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse chaired by Justice Lowell Goddard.

Leicestershire Police said they are ‘aware of the progress being made by the IPCC’, but added it would be ‘inappropriate’ to comment further as the inquiry is active.
