Tunnock name takes bow on new lifeboat

- By Robert Fairburn

THE family has long been famous for its sweet treats – but now the Tunnock name will also be saving lives.

When the RNLI station in St Abbs shut down after more than a century last September, veteran confectioner Boyd Tunnock stepped in with a huge donation to fund a replacement service.

And yesterday, the Berwickshire village turned out to welcome its new lifeboat – which is set to be named the Thomas Tunnock after his grandfather and late brother.

Mr Tunnock, who owns the Lanarkshirebased maker of the eponymous Tea Cakes, will officially name the new craft at a ceremony in September.

Last night a spokesman for the St Abbs lifeboat station said: ‘It will be one of the quickest and most technologically advanced lifeboats in the UK.

‘Everyone involved with St Abbs independent lifeboat would like to thank the public for their support.’
