Supermarket recall for 23 yoghurts that may contain rubber

- By Sophie Borland Health Editor

THOuSanDS of popular yoghurts are being recalled over fears they contain pieces of rubber which pose a health risk.

They include a large number of products sold in the major supermarkets.

The contaminated yoghurts are all made by yeo Valley farms, based in Somerset, which manufactures for many of the large supermarket chains.

in total, 23 different products are affected, including Tesco Finest Strawberries & Cream yoghurt, Waitrose Deliciously fruity raspberry low fat yogurt and The Collective Dairy Wild blueberry yoghurt.

as well as Waitrose and Tesco, certain own-products sold by Sainsbury’s, asda and the Coop are also affected.

Customers are being asked to return them immediately for a full refund.

yeo Valley said rubber was found in one of the fruit conserves added to its yoghurts and provided by an outside supplier. it is not known if anybody has been affected by the contamination.

a Food Standards agency spokesman said: ‘yeo Valley is recalling a number of its yoghurt products as they possibly contain pieces of rubber.

‘This means the products are a possible risk to health. if you have bought any of the above products, do not eat them. instead, follow the advice on the point-of-sale notices.’ The company is best known for its yeo Valley Organic yoghurts in large pots and has become a household name since launching in 1992.

it has benefited from a recent surge in popularity for organic products and its yoghurts are the fourth most popular in the uK behind Muller Corners, activias and Muller Lights.

it has branched into supplying supermarkets with yogurt to sell under their own brands.

now, its products are consumed by eight million households in the uK and turnover is £300million a year.

it is owned by the Mead family, who have farmed in Somerset for 500 years and employ 1,500 staff. Milk is taken from 80 family-run farms in the area and the company’s emphasises its organic values.

a spokesman for yeo Valley said last night: ‘We can confirm that a piece of rubber was found in a fruit conserve.

‘The supplier has identified the cause and identified all fruit conserves, an ingredient used in yoghurts, that may be affected.

‘Whilst the risk is considered to be low, we will be disposing of any potentially affected yoghurts that have not yet been dispatched, as well as recalling the relevant batches of products from those affected retailers.

‘We are working with the Food Standards agency and the supplier in question. We would like to apologise unreservedly to all customers.’

Shoppers are advised to visit the Food Standards agency website www.food.gov.uk for a full list of affected products and their sell-by dates. ■Lidl is recalling packets of peanuts and fruit yoghurts because the labels fail to mention in english that they contain nuts or milk.
