Women trapped on rocks airlifted to safety

- By Victoria Allen

A MAJOR rescue operation had to be launched after four young women became stuck on rocks in the middle of a waterfall.

The group had to be airlifted out of the Falls of Falloch, in Stirlingshire, around an hourand-a-half after becoming stranded.

They are understood not to have suffered any serious injuries.

The incident brought a massive response from the fire service, the special operations team of the Scottish Ambulance Service and Killin mountain rescue team. An emergency rescue helicopter carried the four to safety at around 4.50pm, after a concerned member of the public who spotted them called for help.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said yesterday: ‘Police in Forth Valley were called to the Falloch Falls by Loch Lomond at 3.15pm to assist in the rescue of four females from the middle of the falls.’

The women, who have not been named, were seen huddled on the rocks with bare feet and three of them were without warm jackets.

The Falls of Falloch, a beauty spot nicknamed ‘Rob Roy’s Bathtub’, is popular among wild swimmers and people who jump off its rocky crags. Close to the village of Crianlarich, it falls 33 feet and is also a popular picnic destination.

The alarm is believed to have been raised by a dog-walker who saw the young women and was concerned for their safety amid the rising water.

A special operations team of paramedics and a local ambulance are understood to have been sent in case the young women were injured.

Details of whether or not they had suffered any injuries were unavailable from police last night.
