Horror on family beach as five swimmers are feared drowned

FiVE people were feared to have drowned yesterday while swimming off a crowded beach on the hottest day of the year.

three men were pulled from the sea at Camber Sands, Rye, East Sussex in the afternoon – but attempts to revive them failed.

Last night, two more bodies were reported to have been washed ashore. the alarm was raised at around 2.10pm when the first male swimmer was spotted struggling.

As the emergency services were scrambled to the scene, another man was seen in trouble ten minutes later. Both men were pulled from the sea in a life-threatenin­g condition.

A third swimmer was then recovered from the same stretch of water at 2.35pm.

Last night, local reports said that two more bodies had been found on Camber Sands, taking the death toll to five. there was no official confirmati­on.
