THE bad news is that GCSE passes are down. The good news is that the number of pupils passing foreign languages such as Arabic is at a record high.

That’s because they’re immigrants taking exams in their mother tongue. We’re not told how well they got on in english.

I’m reminded of the episode of Porridge, in which Fletch is expressing pride at the education on offer in Slade Prison.
