KEYS TO THE KINGDOM

Popular open day reveals to visitors why many choose Fife for its lifestyle

- Fiona McKay by

THE Kingdom of Fife has not only just been voted Scotland’s happiest place to live, it has also been named as the country’s number one outdoor destination for the last eight years by Scottish Natural Heritage. With a stunning coastline and beautiful landscape, the Kingdom is a natural outdoor playground and walking the Fife Coastal Path, pictured below, one of Scotland’s longest continuous walks and one of its Great Trails, is a superb way to explore the region. But it’s not just the coast that is magical!

Head inland, south of lovely Loch Leven and just a few miles off the M90 connecting Perth and Edinburgh and you’ll come across Fife’s biggest free visitor attraction – Lochore Meadows Country Park.

Managed by Fife Coast & Countryside Trust and situated in the heart of Fife, with more than 1,200 acres to explore, there’s a lot to keep the family entertained here, whether that’s on the loch and the beach or in the wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands.

Spend time walking, bird-watching, otterspotting, cycling, fishing, paddling, enjoying the playpark or relaxing with friends and family with a picnic or barbecue. Much of the park is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, and all-terrain mobility scooters are also available for hire.

This Saturday, you can discover all of this at the popular annual Lochore Meadows Country Park open Day. The fun starts at 10am with a variety of things to see and do for the young and young at heart, and the open Day programme runs on until 4pm.

Enjoy demonstrations from the park rangers, jump in the saddle for a pony ride or take a buggy ride around the park. You can also try sit-on kayaking, test your skills on the climbing wall or take a Segway tour.

Christopher Trotter, Fife’s Cookery ambassador, will be cooking up something special for a live audience, using fantastic local produce.

There will also be a variety of local artisan food producers’ and crafters’ stalls to browse, celebrating the best that Fife has to offer in food and gifts.

Chris Broome, chief executive of Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, says: ‘The open day always proves very popular with those in the local area and further afield, as it gives people the perfect chance to sample the variety of diverse activities available at Lochore Meadows.’

Entry to the open day is free for all the family to enjoy, with a recommended donation of just £2 to cover parking costs – each car will be given a leaflet containing a map and details of the events planned for the day. To find more information go to:
