Tequila that’s a real tonic
HOPE may be at hand for those of us who enjoy a tipple . . . but can’t cope with hangovers. Your unlikely saviour could be a type of tequila. Health-conscious types swear by blanco tequila — made from 100 per cent blue agave (a cactus-like plant). This is traditional Mexican tequila, and it’s sipped like whisky. The stuff with the ‘slammer’ reputation is ‘mixto’ — mixed with other alcohol, chemicals and colourings that can make your head throb the next day. If you can’t face tequila, Illinois University scientists are pioneering hangover-proof wine, after isolating the yeast gene they think is responsible. It’s not proven yet, but fingers crossed . . .
