Crumbs! ‘Healthy’ Greggs has stopped selling scones

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Correspondent

GREGGS has angered customers by dropping scones from stores.

Its fruit, cheese or bran treats have been scrapped by the high street bakery, which has 1,700 shops.

It is part of the company’s move away from baked goods to trendy food-on-the-go items, spicy imported flavours, and its rising emphasis on health.

A scone would not be a healthy option, with 294 calories.

These days, the Greggs menu includes fruit medleys, tropical fruit fingers and strawberry, granola and yoghurt pots.

It is also switching from pasties and sausage rolls to salads, burritos and wraps. Last week, the baker said it may even stop selling freshly baked loaves. But the decision has not gone down well on social media. Builder Torv Alexander, 47, of Edinburgh, tweeted: ‘When a baker stops baking scones you’ve got to wonder.’

And Simon Reeves, 36, of Harrow, north London, was fuming after visiting his branch for a fruit scone this week. He said: ‘The lady behind the counter looked at me as if I was mad.’

Greggs began a ‘phased withdrawal’ earlier this year, but this week confirmed that there are no stores selling scones.

A spokesman said: ‘They weren’t very popular – we often refresh our range.’
