BO, A seven-year-old Portuguese water dog (pictured far left with the Obamas’ other dog, Sunny, in the State Dining Room) was a gift to Barack Obama’s family from JFK’s brother, the late Ted Kennedy. He has appeared on American chat shows Jimmy Fallon and Ellen, had a comic book written about him and been the subject of four children’s books. And he sure knows how to travel in style. As well as making regular trips on the luxurious Air Force One, he has been transported on his own flight to family holidays (on an MV-22 Osprey, a hybrid aircraft which takes off like a helicopter but flies like a plane). Type his name into Google and an array of products for sale bearing his name come up, from plush toys to teacups. Just don’t mention the diet he’s been on since 2012 after he began piling on the pounds. ANNUAL COST: £50,000 on security alone
