PROTECT WINTER GREENS
IF YOU grow brassicas, give them a quick health check. Tall plants, particularly Brussels sprouts (left) and springsprouting broccoli, are susceptible to wind rock. If yours grow in an exposed position, use canes and string to hold them firm. Though hardy, brassicas are vulnerable to bird attack. Use broadmesh netting to keep off the birds and prevent the risk of accumulating snow during the winter. Remove dead lower leaves from tall plants and pick off any ‘blown’ sprouts, keeping the stems clean.
