CHRISTMAS EVE REDS
2015 Torres Sangre de Toro, Spain
£6.50, reduced to £5 until December 27, Asda
GOSH, this is a steal. If you bear in mind that £3 and more of this price is tax and the retailer’s margin, you’ll realise just what a rock-bottom price this is for such a famous wine. If you are organising a drinks party for Christmas Eve, this is the red wine for you. It’s packed with juicy, red berry flavours and has a remarkably long finish.
2015 Survivor Offspring Red Blend, Overhex Wines, Swartland, South Africa
£7, reduced to £5 until Jan 9, Tesco
IGNORE the bonkers label and sink your teeth into this jolly useful wine. Made from a blend of syrah, pinotage and cabernet sauvignon, the nose is fascinating, the palate velvety and the finish succulent and long – and it only costs a fiver.
2015 La Grande Tour, Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot, Languedoc, France
£6, Sainsbury’s
IT’S a bargain, it’s a blend and it is jaw-droppingly delicious. Leave your snobby wine tendencies at the door and take a dive into a glass of this unassuming hero. It is wonderfully lush and fruit-driven with a sleek texture and bright, firm finish. This is a red wine no-brainer — trust me!
2014 Jim Barry, The Lodge Hill Shiraz, Clare Valley, South Australia
£9.99, Co-op; £13.99, reduced to £9.99 on a ‘mix six’ deal until January 30, Majestic
TEN quid. I say again, ten quid. This is a momentous bargain – it costs a fiver more in Australia! I have people coming up to me on my 100 Best Australian Wines Roadshow saying: ‘Thank you for introducing me to The Lodge Hill.’ This is mind-blowing wine-making from my winery of the year.
2015 Copper Mountain, Cabernet Sauvignon, Langhorne Creek, South Australia
£9, Marks & Spencer
COMING from some of the most fertile and respected vineyards in South Australia, this is a massively juicy, bold, imposing cabernet with lush black fruit and a mighty finish. Stunning and indulgent.
