SIMON SEBAG MONTEFIORE’S (pictured) epic new series is a history of Vienna, the city on the Danube that has been key to European power and politics for 1,000 years. This is a tale filled with brazen, larger-than-life characters, and starts with the empire of the Habsburgs.

HUGH GRANT slips into a cosy role in this romcom, as a past-his-prime Hollywood screenwrit­er forced to take a teaching job and behaving badly. Marisa Tomei (pictured with Grant) is the student and single mum who sees past his bluster and helps him to reboot his life.

‘I’M GOING to remain Pope until the day I die,’ says Pius XIII — a day that, given the global protests against his ruling on abortion, may come sooner than he thinks. This episode picks up pace when he travels to Africa and really soars towards the end.
