EU students will ‘abandon UK’
CAMBRIDGE University says it expects EU admissions to fall by two-thirds after Brexit.
The university, where EU students account for 10 per cent of undergraduates, said 14 per cent fewer students from the continent have applied this year – and it anticipates imminent further reductions.
It was one several institutions, including the London School of Economics and UCL, to complain yesterday that recruitment would be hit by the Leave vote, in an inquiry by the Commons education committee.
Cambridge also said there was a ‘significant risk’ that academics will not come to the UK if they are forced to apply for visas, with potentially ‘serious repercussions’ for Britain’s research status. But Universities UK admitted its members could ‘thrive’ outside the EU with the right Government support.
