IS PRINCESS Eugenie engaged? A nation holds its breath as the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson is seen tootling around town wearing a significant ring on a certain finger.

The constitutional ramifications are enormous. Does this mean that Eugenie’s career as Assistant Tidier of Paperclips in a posh art gallery is over? And that now she can sink into the role of royal mother-to-be without even keeping up the job pretence any longer? Probably.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that her father has announced that he wants his daughters’ future husbands to be given earldoms. That would be Prince Andrew all over, wouldn’t it? Totally in touch with the mood of the people.

May I say this? I do love the Royal Family and worship Her Maj with a passion. However, the thought of a couple of chinless wonders being ennobled because they made the supreme sacrifice and married Tweedledum Beatrice or Tweedledee Eugenie? It’s enough to make one race to the republican barricades.
