NEW YEAR’S EVE WHITES & REDS

-

2015 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, Moncaro, Marche, Italy

£5.99, Waitrose EVERY single year, this wine pops up and astounds me. It is phenomenally good value, tastes accurate and refreshing and is also a crowd-pleaser. This makes it an epic party wine, and it’s so good you could pour it for guests at a dinner party, too.

2015 Paul Mas, Vinus Clairette, Languedoc, France

£8, reduced to £6 until Jan 1, Morrisons GRAB every bottle you can because this discount is insane. This ‘green’ melon-scented wine is a beauty, shimmering in the glass and offering seductive fruit and a long, languid finish. A fine aperitif, it is rich enough to match to a host of dishes, but you will need a few bottles because I guarantee it will disappear fast.

2016 Co-op Truly Irresistible Leyda Valley, Sauvignon Blanc, Chile

£6.99, Co-op WELCOME back for another mention! This wine seems to do the Chilean sauvignon thing better than any other, and at a competitive price, too. I marvel at the skill of the Co-op wine buyers for bringing this superb, zesty wine back from the other side of the world and still giving it a tiddly price.

2015 As Caixas, Godello, Martín Códax, Monterrei, Spain

£8.99, reduced to £6.99 each in a ‘mix six’ deal, until Jan 30, Majestic I WILL stick my neck out and say that the godello grape is just teetering on the brink of stardom because more and more people are falling for its charms. The flavour sits somewhere between albariño, chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc and I would advise you get to the front of the queue and taste this so you are fully up to date with the grape.

2015 Taste the Difference Godello, Bierzo, Spain

£8, reduced to £7, until Dec 13, Sainsbury’s THE godello grape is not as well-known as albariño, but I like it very much because the nose is similar but the palate is a little richer and more textured. This is a superb swap from pinot grigio because it will obliterate the memory of that oft-dreary grape and replace it with a genuinely thoughtful and intriguing flavour which I know you will adore.

2015 Hill Smith Estate, Chardonnay, Eden Valley, South Australia

(£10.99, 60 branches of Waitrose) WITH a touch of oak barrel nuance and some of the most succulent and hypnotic chardonnay fruit imaginable, this is a breakthrough wine for this blend and I would happily have paid twice the price for the flavour. This is a wine that should make burgundies tremble in their boots. Wine lovers — track this down now.

2015 Tim Adams, Riesling, Clare Valley, South Australia

£9, Tesco ONE of the bestvalue whites on the shelves, this racy, lime juice-soaked, dry riesling is a regular member of the Wine of the Week mob in my column in Weekend magazine because it is effortlessly classy and nervejanglingly exciting in equal measure.
