NEW YEAR’S EVE REDS

-

NV Tesco Corbières Rouge, Languedoc, France

£4.50, Tesco MY GOODNESS, a drinkable red wine for less than a fiver. What’s the world coming to? Well, I can tell you this is a very worthy fellow made from syrah, carignan and grenache and I, for one, cannot fault its honesty or delivery. Three cheers.

2014 Caliente Rojo, Tempranillo, Campo de Borja, Spain

£7, reduced to £5 until Jan 6, Morrisons THIS is a new label to me, but I can tell you that this mix of tempranillo and merlot makes a massive impact on the palate with its black fruit and superb spice. At only a fiver, this is a bargain not to be missed.

2014 Co-op Fairtrade Truly Irresistible Malbec, Famatina Valley, Argentina

£6.99, Co-op WITH ten months of oak treatment and some seriously impressive depth of blackberry and damson fruit, this is a very smart wine with an impressive pedigree. You would be wise to grab a few bottles because it is the perfect match for charred steak or top-flight bangers.

2014 Taste the Difference Douro, Portugal

£8, Sainsbury’s MADE from port grapes touriga nacional, touriga franc and tinta roriz, by the excellent Quinta do Crasto outfit, this is a mighty red wine with a deep, mouth-coating flavour. Fortunately, it sports a cheeky price, so load up with this macho, main course red and save a few pennies, too.

2016 Exquisite Collection Uco Valley Malbec, Argentina

£11.99, magnum 150cl, Aldi ALDI’S sole mention this Christmas is this brilliant double-sized malbec from Argentina. Forget every other wine in the store because this is the one to head for. Big, bold, bright and juicy, this is a superb red with masses of charm and a long, lingering finish.
