Row over the girl of seven who wants to be Taylor Swift
Lots of little girls want to dress like their pop idols.
But when this seven-yearold performed as Taylor Swift on a TV talent show, her appearance divided opinion.
Watching little Xiamara Vigor parade on stage in full make-up including bright red lipstick, some viewers felt the routine was overtly ‘sexualised’.
In one sequence two adult dancers rip off her white marching band uniform to reveal a sparkly dress underneath – just like Miss Swift did for her hit song You Belong With Me.
Xiamara, known as Xia, was appearing on a talent show in the Philippines. She and her brother liam, nine, were both born in the UK to Filipino mother christy, 42, and 50-year-old construction worker Alan. The family were forced to defend her look yesterday following criticism from good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan.
He said: ‘This is the sexualisation of a young girl. I really feel uncomfortable watching that. It shouldn’t be what a seven-yearold should be doing.’
Xia’s grandmother Patricia Vigor, 77, said the little girl was ‘just playing a role’. ‘She watches these stars, like Taylor Swift and Selena gomez, and she copies what she sees,’ she said from her home in exmouth, Devon.
‘She doesn’t wear make up or dress up when she is not on the show.’ Father Alan, who has split from Xia’s mother, added: ‘We know the bigger picture over here. on the show next week, Xia is going to dress up as Axl Rose. It’s like a pantomime. It’s been taken out of context.’
