McCulloch not ruling out Kilmarnock post

- By STEPHEN McGOWAN

KILMARNOCK interim boss Lee McCulloch has refused to rule out filling the Rugby Park hotseat on a permanent basis. Assistant manager to Lee Clark before the Englishman’s sudden departure for Bury, McCulloch is the man Killie’s three-man board want to take the club forward. Wary of becoming the latest managerial casualty of a club now seeking their seventh boss in seven years, the former Rangers captain insists nothing will happen before Sunday’s home league clash with Aberdeen. ‘Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith,’ said McCulloch. ‘Either in management, or as a

player. I’m not saying I’m about to do that. I’m not saying I’m not. ‘I really don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s the truth. ‘I know there are people going: “He is desperate for it”. Others are saying: “He should get it or shouldn’t get near it”. ‘The most important thing is the club. They need to get stability. ‘It’s not about Lee McCulloch. It’s not about anything else; it’s the club and the board making the right appointment.’ Asked about perceptions he has already been offered the Killie job on a permanent basis, McCulloch added: ‘I can’t do anything about what people think. ‘I met (director) John Kiltie and Michael Johnston very briefly yesterday. ‘It was a quick chat then back out to training. ‘So, yes, we will take Sunday and we’ll see how it goes from there.’ Adopting a different tone to 12 months ago when he flatly ruled himself out of the running for the job before Clark’s unexpected appointment, he added: ‘I’m not going to say I’m not interested in the job. That would be wrong but I’m not going to say anything else. ‘I think the most important thing is to take training this week ahead of our game against an Aberdeen team that’s just scored seven goals. ‘It’s a great game for the players to go out and show everybody how good they are live on TV. You can’t beat playing in those games.’ Other contenders for the Killie hotseat include former Rugby Park midfielder Gary Holt, former boss Mixu Paatelainen and League Cup-winning St Mirren boss Danny Lennon.
