A rare view of the foggy Forth

- By Jenny Kane

ON a sunny day it is one of the most impressive vistas in Scotland.

Even in thick fog, the view from the top of the new Queensferry Crossing is to be marvelled at.

Yesterday, looking down from the north tower of the new structure, only the tips of the Forth road and rail bridges could be seen.

The dramatic image was taken by electrician Michael Cunnea yesterday morning as he worked on the new crossing.

But the view will look remarkably different next week, with the UK set to enjoy a sudden surge in temperatures.

A blast of Caribbean air is predicted to sweep the country, offering the potential for temperatures here to exceed those in the Mediterranean.

The air mass is making its way over the Atlantic Ocean and is set to bring highs of up to 17C (62F) on Monday.

Aberdeen is tipped as one of the most likely spots to feel the heat, with the east of the country largely enjoying the best of the warmer spell. The rise could make parts of the UK among the hottest locations in Europe, following snow and freezing temperatures on the continent earlier this month.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: ‘In terms of temperatures there may be isolated locations where temperatures reach 16C to 17C (60F to 62F) but more broadly it will be mild, with some of the warmest areas being the east and north east of the country.’

MeteoGroup said temperatures may only reach highs of 15C (59F), though this is likely to be enough to push the UK above parts of southern Europe, including the Balearic Islands and Sardinia.

MeteoGroup forecaster Tom Whittaker said: ‘Generally speaking, it’s going to be close, but we may see temperatures of 15C (59F), which could be higher than places like Palma in Majorca, and parts of southern France. It’s likely to be warmest in the east, south east and eastern parts of Scotland, to the east of the Highlands.’
