THE hero of the final episode is ex-Ireland rugby player Paddy Mayne, who became the leader of the SAS after the capture of David Stirling. This hard-drinking warrior didn’t have the charm of his predecessor, but his acts of bravery are barely believable. The fact he wasn’t awarded a VC still rankles with the unit today.
