MISGUIDED MEDICINE

-

‘HEALTHY’ things we do that are actually unhealthy. This week: Using nasal decongestants for more than three days NASAL spray works by shrinking the nasal tissue, helping you to breathe. But overuse causes the tissue to swell — which can lead to stuffiness and a condition known as rhinitis medicamentosa.

And any spray will only be effective if used properly, says Henry Sharp, a consultant ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon at East Kent Hospitals.

‘The medicine needs to go into the nose, rather than down your throat. To ensure this, kneel with your head on the ground or lean over the edge of a table or chair, so your head is forward. Don’t use nasal sprays while sitting up.

‘Once the drops are in your nose, stay in this position for a minute or two, so the drops can work their way to the top of the nose between the eyes.’
