Did you take David’s suit by mistake, Posh?
Once upon a time, Posh Spice would pour herself into a mini-dress that clung to every inch of her figure. But these days, it seems, Victoria Beckham has a growing fondness for clothes that are too big – as this oversized beige trouser suit amply proves.
There’s nothing harder to pull off than a figure-swamping suit like this one. A design of her own that was seen in her autumn/winter 2017 catwalk show but is not yet available to buy, it’s typical of the relaxed, informal designs of her latest collection.
But everything about this ensemble, which she wore while out in new York yesterday, looks exaggerated, from the billowing blazer to the towering christian Louboutin platforms poking out from beneath her wide-legged trousers.
The shoulder pads simply add to the impression that the mother-of four is swamped by her clothes. even its colour is a risky choice, as beige makes every crease or fold become painfully clear. The same attire in a navy or black would have been more flattering.
Sticking with the masculine image, Mrs Beckham, 42, chose a sheer shirt buttoned all the way to the top, shunning any hint of femininity. Her large brown clutch bag complements her favourite tortoiseshell sunglasses.
If it wasn’t for her obvious confidence, then the entire outfit would have looked like an enormous mistake, perhaps taken accidentally from husband David’s wardrobe.
Yet somehow, the former Spice Girl does make the gutsy ensemble work. But she’s oozing self-assurance rather than style — and it’s probably a look that most mere mortals ought to steer clear of.
